This was made for my mum for Mothers Day. I don’t usually make a Mothers Day cake, but I’d been ill over my mums birthday and hadn’t made her a proper birthday cake, so did this one instead. I don’t usually do smooth iced cakes either, I’m not very good at getting very thing neat and even, but I wanted to experiment with painting with food colouring. It’s Jamie Oliver’s chocolate beetroot cake, which is one of the most scrummy gorgeous moist and delicious cakes ever, even if it is a right faff to make.
Anyway, some making of photos;
So far, so good. Fairly smooth, for me at least!
It wasn’t going particularly well at this’ll point. The icing leaves and flower I’d put on went all droopy when I tried to paint them. They were supposed to be curling up, but I worked with it. The ‘paint’, made from food colouring paste and vodka, wasn’t behaving itself either. If I used it too thick it wouldn’t go on smoothly, but then when I thinned it down it was seeping into the icing and spreading colour where I didn’t want it. As it was far past my bed time by this point, I mostly gave up, throwing some glitter on the mess and hoping for the best.
Either way, my mum seemed to like it. Job done!
